Casual Soapbox

Casual Soapbox is a blog, the purpose of which is to provide me with a venue to expound upon politics, popular culture, religion, humor, and any other topic that boils my blood. I'd love to say I have big plans for this site, but I don't, except to bloviate pompously, deprecate myself and others, practice my verbal skills, and pathetically imitate popular people I admire. So, if any of that appeals to you, this blog's for you!

The Conservative War on Christmas

Remember last year when all the conservative talk people were all up in your face about how there was a war on Christmas? Remember how they were harassing poor little Mom-and-Pop retailers like Wal-Mart into saying "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays"? Remember how civilization hung in the balance? Well... it's baaaa-aaaaack!

Think Progress, from Nov 14th (It's funny how they didn't even wait until after Thanksgiving to start their war on Christmas...)

Last night, Bill O’Reilly revived his baseless claim that Christmas is “under seige” in America from “secular progressives,” highlighting Wal-Mart’s recent announcement that it will use the phrase “Merry Christmas” in its promotional materials this year.

O’Reilly portrayed Wal-Mart’s decision as a victory in the “culture war battle” for those who “want to retain the Christmas tradition,” and lauded Wal-Mart as “the Christmas guys!”

Ah yes. Victory. It's been so long since Christmas had a victory. I mean, since the Santa robot we created went all Frankenstein's monster on us...

And just when I thought there couldn't possibly be anything more in this story that was worth my time, I saw this on CNN:

A homeowners' association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs.

Don't you hate it when Christmas-hating liberals complain about peace-nik wreaths that worship Satan and don't support our troops? Wait... hmm.. that doesn't sound like liberals... I mean come on. Oh and get this.. the article concludes with this little gem (emphasis mine):

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything.

Kearns fired all five committee members.

Now, that's the conservatism I know. Bringing their War on Christmas to an architectural control committee near you.

Happy Holidays, folks!
