Casual Soapbox

Casual Soapbox is a blog, the purpose of which is to provide me with a venue to expound upon politics, popular culture, religion, humor, and any other topic that boils my blood. I'd love to say I have big plans for this site, but I don't, except to bloviate pompously, deprecate myself and others, practice my verbal skills, and pathetically imitate popular people I admire. So, if any of that appeals to you, this blog's for you!

Fond Memories of Tom DeLay

It's my anniversary today, so not much time to post. In the meantime, check out Campus Progress' top ten DeLay quotes. This brings back the good old days:

1. “Nothing is more important in the face of a war than cutting taxes.” – Those famous DeLay priorities. (And here we thought it would be “providing armor” or “having an exit strategy.”)

2. “I AM the federal government.” – Smokin’ Tom to a staffer, after being told he wasn’t allowed to puff on his cigar in a federal building.

...

6. “Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?”— DeLay to children living in the Astrodome during Hurricane Katrina

There's more, of course. Check it out.

Thanks, Sara! We went out to Shoreline Grill, which was awesome! We actually intended to go to European Bistro, but were foiled once again -- this time by traffic on I-35.

That Katrina quote is kind of a harsh treatment, Abram. While I was working at the Red Cross Shelter here in Austin, I made similar comments to the kids. It was important to make them feel as comfortable as possible, and for many kids, that meant treating it like some sort of an adventure - that allowed them some time to grasp what was really happening.
And, I actually had kids telling me what fun they were having. I encourage you to look at my archives (September) to read some of my comments.

I suppose you're right Caroline. I just hate to give Tom DeLay the benefit of the doubt on anything, but that particular quote is obviously taken out of context, and was probably meant to be constructive. DeLay just makes such a good master villain, it's so tempting to see everything he says that way. I really don't want to in any way diminish the efforts of those who helped those kids to cope with a devastating situation.
